The “American” Resurrection

american eggWe live in a society that boosts money and power. We live in a society that values freedom above integrity and justice. We live in a generation that has forgotten our motto: “In God We Trust.” Frankly, I think pledging allegiance to the flag and that statement has lost much of its meaning.

So, I would like to recall what our country was really founded on. “All men are created equal” and are entitled to “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.” What does this phrase mean?

Am I saying that only the “Rich” are entitled to “Happiness?” Doesn’t seem that way. Am I saying that only “Americans” are entitled to “Liberty?” No. It says very clearly “All men.” So wait…does that mean the African-American? The homeless person? The transgendered? The single mother? The drug addict? The alcoholic? Yes. “All men are created EQUAL.”

This specific principle was founded in 1776 with “The Declaration of Independence.” The document goes on to say that: “That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government.”

Now, the problem with this is that this puts the power into the hands of the people. It requires us to stand up and take charge of our country. It requires us to practice what we preach.

But in an economy where 90 percent of our wealth is controlled by roughly 10 percent of the population, in a nation where “freedom” is phrased as sexism and racism, in a world where children go to bed hungry, and in a generation where sex and violence are becoming a common occurrence in elementary schools, I think we can all agree something is not right.

Let’s resurrect America. Let’s bring our country back to its true greatness. Not a cookie cutter impression.

 

The Real Meaning of Valentine’s Day

The greeting card industry has capitalized on the idea that we need to be validated by our spouses and significant others every February 14th. However, that is not at all what this holiday is about. The holiday itself came about because of a very special man named Valentine. Valentine’s love was not a romantic or commercial hallmark card type of love. No. It was much deeper than that. This is part of Valentine’s story:

A common hagiography describes Saint Valentine, as the former Bishop of Terni, Narnia and Amelia, a town of Umbria, in central Italy. While under house arrest of Judge Asterius, and discussing his faith with him, Valentinus (the Latin version of his name) was discussing the validity of Jesus. The judge put Valentinus to the test and brought to him the judge’s adopted blind daughter. If Valentinus succeeded in restoring the girl’s sight, Asterius would do anything he asked. Valentinus laid his hands on her eyes and the child’s vision was restored. Immediately humbled, the judge asked Valentinus what he should do. Valentinus replied that all of the idols around the judge’s house should be broken, the judge should fast for three days, and then undergo baptism. The judge obeyed and as a result, freed all the Christian inmates under his authority. The judge, his family and his forty-four member household (family members and servants) were baptized.[21] Valentinus was later arrested again for continuing to proselytize and was sent to the prefect of Rome, to the emperor Claudius Gothicus (Claudius II) himself. Claudius took a liking to him until Valentinus tried to convince Claudius to embrace Christianity, whereupon Claudius refused and condemned Valentinus to death, commanding that Valentinus either renounce his faith or he would be beaten with clubs, and beheaded. Valentinus refused and Claudius’ command was executed outside the Flaminian Gate February 14, 269 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Valentine).

So you see Valentine’s Day is not about chocolate and roses. It is about a much deeper love. The love that God and Jesus have for us and the love that we should have for one another. Imagine a love so great that you would rather die than to renounce it. That is faith ladies and gentlemen. That is Christianity and that is love. God’s love. It says “he so loved the world that he gave us his only son so that we might not perish but have eternal life.” You see the real meaning is not in that 4.99 dollar box of chocolate that you think symbolizes unfailing love. No. The real love is that there is someone who love you so much that he gave his own life to save yours. Now that is why I love Valentine’s Day. I love it for what it represents. My faith. My love. My God. Most importantly though, it reminds me that there was a man that loved God so much that he would rather die than say he didn’t. That is love ladies and gentlemen. That is love.

Back to the Future…the story continues

“Well mom and dad,” stated Marty “funny story actually. You see what happened was I was a kid and this man came up to me and said I’ll give you a million dollars if you let me change your face. Well, needless to say, I didn’t ask questions. I jumped on that bandwagon faster than a fat man on a doughnut.”
“You’re joking, right?!” said Lorraine.
“I mean honestly…how…why…” said George.
“Yeah I am,” said Marty “here’s the truth. I went back in time using the Doc’s time machine. While I was there I sort off…accidentally…messed up how you and dad met so I had to stick around a while and get everything sorted out.”
“Uh huh…” said George. “Oh just come to clean Lorraine…Did you sleep with Calvin Klein or not.”
“Oh, George! How could you?!” mutters Lorraine.
Marty looks at his folks and whispers to himself, “Well…looks like I’m going back in time…again…how do I fix this one?!”

Marty pondered his predicament for a while. He thought until his brain hurt. Finally, he said to himself, “I wonder what Doc would say about all this?”

So Marty went to the Doc’s place and said loudly, “Hey Doc! Doc!”

The Doc stumbles up to the door. He barely realizes that Marty is talking to him. His mind is preoccupied it seems. Einstein runs up to him and slobbers all over his shoes. Marty grabs his muzzle and shakes it.

“Marty!” says Doc. “I wasn’t expecting you. Is there something wrong? The earth’s gravitational field did seem a bit off this morning.”

“It’s my folks, Doc. They found the picture of me from when I traveled back in time and now my Dad thinks my mom cheated on him with Calvin Klein.”

“Oh, Marty…That’s nothing a little wine and dine can’t fix. I wouldn’t worry so much.”

“I don’t know Doc…he seemed pretty insistent.”

“Trust me Marty. Soon he’ll forget all about Calvin Klein.”

“Yeah, Doc. But what if he doesn’t…”

“Well….then I guess we’ll have to go back in time and correct this little mishap…although I am not quite sure how. I guess we could….No that wouldn’t work. Hmmm….yes this will be tricky.”

Risky Business

Let’s be frank. Sex sells. Sex has become a cultural icon. But what does that mean exactly? It means that we are sacrificing our youth, our morals, and our values. And for what exactly? Well…I guess it is basically so we can be free spirits and do what we would like. But what does that really mean? I mean do we even know what we want? Let’s look at some facts:

  • Depression is the most common cause of disability in women, and approximately 25% of all women will experience severe depression at some point in their lives.
  • About 14 million adolescent girls become pregnant each year, with over 90% of those girls living in developing countries.
  • Over 90% of all cases of eating disorders occur in women, and nearly seven million women in the U.S. currently suffer from anorexia nervosa or bulimia (http://facts.randomhistory.com/2009/04/30_women.html).

God never wanted us to make ourselves sick or be upset about our bodies. The opposite in fact. God actually said “be fruitful and multiple.” However, our body is a temple. What that means is that we should not be selling it to the highest bidder. I have heard people say I do not know if I am compatible with someone unless I have sex with them. But let’s think. How can physical compatibility prepare you for the trails and tribulations of a relationship? It can’t. That is why in the Bible it says, “Love is patient, love is kind…” and not “find a great sex life.” God knew what kinds of trials we would be facing. He also knew that we would need a partner who was compatible with us on an emotion and intellectual level to overcome them. Let me put it this way, do you get bills or other things in the mail that ask you to rate your sex life or do they ask you to pay an amount of some kind? Exactly. Do you think it will help your marriage that Fabio turned out to be an amazing lover who has no morals and little drive or ambition?

The most disconcerting, however, is the effect this is having on our youth. Children are wearing clothes that leave almost nothing to the imagination. Rap songs are degrading girls and they are accepting it. Boys are accepting like thugs and treating women with about as much respect as a prostitute, if they are lucky. Girls are getting pregnant because they associate sex with love. Surprise. Surprise. Wonder why. It is because we literally live in a society and a culture that tells them just that.

Even as an adult, I still struggle with feeling like I am not exactly what society expects. Society’s expectations are impossible to live up to. And honestly, why would you want to? Personally, I would much rather focus on God’s promises for my life. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Prosperity. Hope. A Future. Or. Sex. Freedom. And False Love.

The choice is yours. I have made mine. What will yours be?

The purpose of this blog is to effect change. Corny I know. But honestly look at our world. I think we all agree that something needs to give. Look at our presidential candidates. I don’t know about you but I want better for future generations. I want a world where Love your neighbor is a common occurrence not a mere fleeting thought. I want a world where despite differences there is respect and understanding. I want a world where we lift each other up not bring each other down. I want a world where I girls are not ashamed of their bodies or their brains. A world where boys do not have to hide their emotions or their sensitivity. I want a world where GOD is present in people’s lives. I want a world where the world’s wealth is distributed evenly. A world where women do not have to abort their babies because they do not have the necessary resources to keep them. I want a world where what is right and what is wrong are no longer skewed. A world where it is clear where I am supposed to be and what I am supposed to be doing. I want a world where when I turn on the TV or the radio I do not hear offensive statements or see half naked people. I want a world where kids are not subjected to violence, drugs, and cursing on a daily basis. I want a world where we stop treating each other as though we are better because of our circumstances. I want a world that is run by environmentalists, educators, scientists, and the working class. NOT a world that is run by people who have no real clue what we might need. I want to abolish poverty and racism. Hate is learned. Love is from God. Let’s work together to effect change. United we stand. Divided we fall. Let’s unite as a community and as a world. We can do this. We can change things for the better but it needs to start now and we need to take action. Join me. I will post things that I hope you will comment on. Donald Trump and Christianity

The Bible specifically says that you cannot serve both God and money. Trump’s whole life was about getting ahead. He is constantly seeking more money and more power. No wonder he’s running for President of the United States.

Upon Trump’s announcement to run for president, his scathing, derogatory remarks about Mexicans and immigration caused NBC to sever business ties with him. “Due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump,” NBC responded in a statement. “To that end, the annual Miss USA and Miss Universe Pageants, which are part of a joint venture between NBC and Trump, will no longer air on NBC” (http://www.biography.com/people/donald-trump-9511238#synopsis).

Aside from his scathing remarks about Mexicans, he had some choice remarks for war hero John McCain.

“He’s not a war hero. He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured,” Trump said, referring to McCain having been detained during the Vietnam War for several years after being gunned down as an airman, surviving multiple broken limbs and torture. Military veteran groups and advocates have generally denounced Trump’s statements (http://www.biography.com/people/donald-trump-9511238#synopsis).

Overall, I do not think Trump represents what we are looking for in our world. Personally, I want someone committed to love NOT hate.
